Sockeye (Red) Salmon fishing is usually strong through the first week with a mix of bright and red fish. Dollies are feeding like crazy and the rainbows are hunting for spawning Kings. By the second week of August, plenty of Kings are spawning and the egg bite is on. Trout and Dollies begin their nearly exclusive focus on eggs by mid month and the fishing gets hot. Silvers start moving up the lower Kenai early in the month, with the run building towards the middle. They begin to stack up between the 15th and 20th in good fly holding waters.
The later half of August transitions from summer to fall and from salmon returning to salmon spawning. This is when the peak for trout fishing occurs. While the days are getting shorter, the action is heating up.
