The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is often refered to as "Alaska in miniature". This does not mean features of the refuge are diminutive, but that so much of what makes Alaska a special place can be found in a relatively small area.
The KNWR protects almost two million acres of forests, wetlands and mountains that are home to almost all of Alaska's notable species other than musk ox and polar bears. Most important to anglers is the fact that 10 miles of the Upper Kenai River, all of Skilak Lake and the first 5 miles of the Lower Kenai River are within the Refuge. Not only does the refuge encompass almost 2 million acres, but it borders the Chugach National Forest (5.4 million Acres) and Kenai Fjords National Park.
"Kenai National Wildlife Refuge was established to conserve moose, bears, mountain goats, Dall sheep, wolves and other furbearers, salmonoids and other fish, waterfowl and other migratory and nonmigratory birds; to fulfill international treaty obligations of the United States with respect to fish and wildlife and their habitats; to ensure water quality and necessary water quantity within the Refuge; to provide, in a manner consistent with the first two purposes, opportunities for scientific research, interpretation, environmental education, and land management training; and to provide, in a manner compatible with all the aforementioned purposes, opportunities for fish and wildlife-oriented recreation."
