As fall gets late and a taste of winter sometimes fills the air, the fish are still trying to keep the calories coming. After the salmon spawn begins to fade, many of the trout and most of the dollies will migrate in search of food and ultimately winter habitat. Plenty of catchable fish are available if you know where to look. While the catch rates may go down compared to September, the quality is high. The rainbows of October are as fat as they are going to get. The catching can be steady at times, but hunting for the big fish is more of what October is often about.
Silvers remain plentiful in October with holding colorful fish filling many slack water areas. Chrome fish are still moving in and like the late King’s, the late Silver Salmon are generally larger. Catching a few 12-16lb. silvers adds some nice variety to hunting for big rainbows.
